Childhood Cancer Charity | Arabica v. Robusta

Did you know that there are two main types of coffee beans? They are called Arabica and Robusta. Both varieties differ in region, flavor, and caffeine. Keep reading to learn more about coffee for childhood cancer charity!

Region

For starters, both species of coffee beans are grown on opposite ends of the Earth. Arabica beans are most commonly grown in Brazil and neighboring Colombia. It is common for arabica beans to be found growing on the “coffee belt”—the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.

On the other hand, Robusta beans are grown in Vietnam. The bean is native to West Africa, although thriving in tropical conditions in Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

Flavor

In addition, arabica beans contain an array of sweet flavors with few beans grown on the trees.

Arabica bean nutrients consist of:

  • 60% more fat
  • Twice as much sugar than Robusta
  • Higher acidity

Moving forward, Robusta beans contain little or no flavor. There are many cherries on the trees meaning that flavor diversity is relatively low. The most distinct flavor in Robusta beans is the bitter taste that is commonly associated with dark brew coffees.

Caffeine Content

Furthermore, arabica beans contain 1.5% of caffeine—a relatively lower amount than its counterpart. Robusta beans actually contain 80% of caffeine that creates instant caffeine!
